Radical (phonetics)

13: Root of the tongue (radix).

In phonetics, radical refers to a sound that is formed with the root of the tongue (Latin radix linguae ) as the organ of articulation .

The root of the tongue can only narrow the airflow in the throat and thus form pharyngeal consonants :

• [⁠ ħ ⁠] voiceless pharyngeal fricative
• [⁠ ʕ ⁠] Voiced pharyngeal fricative
