Radio-Télévision Libre des Mille Collines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM; dt . Free Radio-Television of a Thousand Hills and the French . Label Mille Collines is synonymous with the country name of Rwanda ), colloquially Hate Radio (dt. Hate Radio ), a Rwandan radio and television broadcaster that gained international fame for its role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide .

History of origin

The station went on air in July 1993 as the mouthpiece of the extremist Hutu power and was conceived as a voice against the RPF station Radio Muhabura or the more balanced radio Rwanda . The program consisted of an undemanding conversation underlaid with coarse street language, which was aimed primarily at target groups in the lower classes of society. The station soon enjoyed great popularity among these social groups.

One of the founders of the station was Georges Rutaganda, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his active role in genocide . Ferdinand Nahimana, another founder and ideologue of the station, was also sentenced to life imprisonment in 2003. Jean-Bosco Barayagwiza (1950-2010) received a 35-year prison sentence.

The station was financed primarily by shareholders from the ruling Hutu party, in particular Félicien Kabuga . He also received support from development aid organizations, including Germany and Switzerland.

Role in genocide

Before the genocide in Rwanda, the station operated hate propaganda against Tutsi , moderate Hutus , Belgians (former colonial powers ) and the United Nations Support Mission for Rwanda . It was the main tool for propaganda and the dissemination of instructions to a largely illiterate population. The radio station Radio Mille Collines was instrumental in coordinating the massacres. Because of these completely uninhibited calls for violence and hatred, the station was given the title "Radio Machete" by some. Genocide propaganda stopped in July 1994 . Criminal proceedings have been opened against some of those responsible and moderators of the station before the International Criminal Court for Rwanda . One of those already convicted is Georges Ruggiu , a Belgian who was the only non-black person to present programs. Félicien Kabuga, head of the station until 1994, was arrested in France on May 16, 2020.
