Jayu Joseon Bangsong ( German  Radio Free Korea , English self-designation Radio Free Chosun ) is a private South Korean shortwave transmitter for listeners in North Korea .

Tasks of the sender

Jayu Joseon Bangsong was founded in 2004 and began broadcasting the following year. It sees its task, among other things, to awaken or strengthen the North Koreans' awareness of democracy through its broadcasts by spreading the "truth about Kim Jong-il ". They also want to give North Koreans access to objective information about South Korea and international events. Apart from the programs for North Korea, one of the broadcaster's principles is to provide information about human rights violations in North Korea and to work for an improvement and peaceful development of relations between the two Korean states. In this context, an English-language page was opened in the summer of 2007 in addition to the Korean-language website.

Charisma

Jayu Joseon Bangsong broadcasts his programs on shortwave . The daily one-hour broadcast has been broadcast daily since mid-2008 at 9 p.m. Korean time ( UTC + 9h) on the frequency 11,540 kHz by a transmitter near Taipei . Previously the frequency was 15,755 kHz and even earlier 9,950 kHz. The resumption of an additional half-hour broadcast is planned (this was previously temporarily suspended.) In the long term, a further expansion of the broadcasting time is planned. The daily radio broadcast is also offered on the website. This offer is aimed more at interested South Koreans, since North Koreans usually have no access to the Internet. The language used in the programs is deliberately adapted to the language used in North Korea.

Reactions from the North Korean government

The North Korean authorities use jammers against the broadcasts of Jayu Joseon Bangsong, as well as those of other broadcasters from abroad aimed at North Koreans (such as Yeollin Bukhan Bangsong or Jayu Asia Bangsong ) in order to hinder or prevent the reception of programs in North Korea . North Korea also called on the South Korean government to stop the broadcasters, most of which are based in South Korea, from operating. Its existence violates an agreement between both sides from the year 2000, according to which the propaganda broadcasts along the common border should be stopped. Jayu Joseon Bangsong also works under strict security precautions for fear of acts of sabotage or attacks by the North Korean secret service.
