Radio Marabu is a non-commercial, German radio station with a focus on alternative music . It is based in Belm and broadcasts programs across Europe on MW, KW, VHF and on the Internet. It can be heard daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the shortwave station EUROPA 24 on shortwave 6150 with a moderated program in large parts of Europe and Germany.
history
It was founded in 1984 by Reiner Palma. The name Marabu refers to the weird music. While searching for a station name, Palma noticed this gray bird in a zoo. In the first few years the program consisted exclusively of special programs. It was broadcast in different languages (German, English, French). Initially broadcasting on various shortwave relays, similar to the better-known Radio Victoria , from 1988 the station founder Reiner Palma made more efforts to local broadcasting options. At the beginning of the 1990s, a broadcasting network was created in this way (including Brussels, Freiberg, Klagenfurt, Rome, Munich). In 1991 satellite broadcasts (RNI-Intelsat 515-1 degrees West) were added. Since the turn of the millennium it has also been broadcast regularly via commercial stations, including Radio Sonnenschein Südtirol , Radio Waddenzee (Netherlands / Great Britain) and Happy Radio Tenerife . Then there was the Internet. After 2000, a daily 5-hour evening program was broadcast on RadioMiAmigo on the Costa Blanca for several years on ASTRA via Radio Caroline and in Spain on VHF. Since March 2017, Radio Marabu can be heard daily between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. via the shortwave station EUROPA 24 on shortwave 6150 with a moderated program in large parts of Europe and Germany. The broadcast was terminated by the station's technician at the beginning of June without prior notice. The reason given is political or cultural content.
Music format
Today's music format emerged in the mid-1990s. The basis is a wide selection of current new releases, supplemented by older music. This can include a wide variety of genres. The makers consciously want to risk breaks in the program. Radio Marabu is aimed at an adult audience interested in music. At certain times of the year there are slight changes in the timbre: in summer they broadcast an extensive selection of summer hits, in autumn there are selected melancholy records (including chansons / classical music), and during the Advent / Christmas season many festive titles are broadcast, supplemented by Christmas tunes /Stories.
In 2006 Marabu reported on the Dutch broadcaster DenHaag FM 92.0 about the World Cup. There were also reports from various festivals (e.g. Roskilde Festival , Greenville Festival , Berlin Festival and Weimar Film Festival ). Music months complemented the program, including a. with the Bavarian artist Turbolenz, Nadine Maria Schmidt and Jürgen Walter, who could also be won as a guest presenter. Since 2015 there has been the "Bavarian Summer" with dialect music three times a summer in cooperation with the BSC MUSIC label. Poetry also has its place, there were elaborate specials about Heinrich Heine and Shakespeare .
In 2020 the "111 jazz albums that you have to listen to" will be included in the program. It is based on a book from EMONS Verlag by ROLAND SPIEGEL (BR) and REINER WITTKAMP. A 16-hour broadcast is available for listening to on the broadcaster's homepage.
