Radishchev Art Museum
The Radishchev Art Museum ( Russian Радищевский музей ) is an art museum in the Russian city of Saratov . The museum building itself is one of the city's landmarks and was designed by the Russian-German architect IWStrom.
history
The museum was founded in 1878 by Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov and named after his grandfather, the Russian writer and philosopher Alexander Nikolayevich Radishchev . At that time it was the first important Russian picture gallery outside Moscow and Saint Petersburg and it was also the first art museum in Russia, which opened its doors seven and fifteen years earlier than the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum . Today, with more than 20,000 works, it is one of the largest museums for Russian art.
collection
The focus of the collection is on Russian works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is also a permanent exhibition that deals with painting, graphics, sculptures and handicrafts from the 15th to 19th centuries in Russia. The museum has an extensive collection of paintings by Russian and international painters, graphics, sculptures, icons, books and manuscripts. These include over 200 works by Bogoljubow as well as works by Alexander Iwanow , Alexander Benois , Wiktor Wasnezow , Iwan Kramskoi , Wassili Polenow , Nikolai Ge , Karl Brjullow , Iwan Schischkin , Konstantin Korowin , Alexei Sawrassow , Ilja Repin , Isaak Lewitan , Wassili Surikow , Wladimir Makowski , Michail Wrubel , Iwan Aiwasowski , Martiros Sarjan , Boris Kustodijew and Nicholas Roerich and other well-known painters.
