Radu Mazarre 2014

Radu Mazăre (born July 5, 1968 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian politician of the Partidul Democrat and Partidul Social Democrat parties . Most recently, he was mayor of the port city of Constanța on the Black Sea from 2000 to 2015 . To avoid several years in prison in Romania, he fled to Madagascar in December 2017 . Here he was arrested in May 2019.

Education and Entrepreneurship

He graduated from the Lyceum in Bucharest and then attended the Civil Marine Institute in Constanța until 1991 with a focus on electromechanics. In 1990 - after the Romanian Revolution - Mazăre had co-founded the newspaper Contrast in Constanța . In 1992 he was co-founder of the Telegraf newspaper and in 1995 acquired the majority in the television station SOTI TV NEPTUN .

Political career

In 1996 Mazarre was elected to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for the PD . In 1997 he left the PD, but kept his mandate. As an independent candidate, Mazăre won the election for Mayor of Constanța in 2000. He later joined the PSD and in 2003 became chairman of the PSD Constanța. In 2004, 2008 and 2012 Mazăre was re-elected as Mayor of Constanța.

Legal proceedings and escape to Madagascar

In 2015 Mazăre was charged with corruption by the National Anti-Corruption Authority and provisionally arrested, whereupon he resigned as mayor and PSD chairman. After 60 days, the Supreme Court and Cassation Court decided to release him from temporary custody.

Mazăre then fled to Madagascar at the end of 2017 and applied for political asylum there. In 2012, he had already acquired around two hectares of land in Madagascar for around one euro per square meter, on which he had a holiday resort built. Madagascar, which ranks 145th out of 176 countries in the corruption index of Transparency International, has no asylum law, so it was expected that he would receive a permanent visa due to his role as an investor. According to newspaper reports, his fortune is around eight billion euros.

At the beginning of February 2019, he was sentenced in absentia in Romania to nine years in prison for unlawfully returned land, abuse of office, false information, false certification and for founding a criminal organization, with total damage totaling 114 million euros. In May 2019, he was sentenced to almost 10 years in prison for corruption and abuse of office, but Mazăre can appeal against this judgment, which has not yet become final.

Since 2018 there has been an international search for Radu Mazăre. He was arrested in Madagascar on May 8, 2019.
