Rafael Llimona i Benet (* 1896 in Barcelona ; † 1957 ibid) was a Catalan painter who followed the tradition of the Olot School .

life and work

Rafael Llimona i Benet first began to study architecture, but continued to work as director of the gardens of the Escola Superior de Bells Oficis in Barcelona . He was a student of Francesc Galí in Barcelona. He went to Paris, Belgium and Italy and studied the great masters of art history there. During another stay in Paris, during which he scrutinized the impressionists, he experienced his calling as a painter.

There are two periods in Rafael Llimona's work: In his early work he was strongly influenced by El Greco's works ; in the later phase he approaches impressionism stylistically and takes Pierre-Auguste Renoir as a model. In Olot and Horta he concentrated on landscape painting, figure painting (especially the female body), interiors and still life.

He has had several solo exhibitions in the Barcelona Sala Parès as well as group exhibitions in Barcelona and Madrid. Some of his works can be found in the museums of modern art in Barcelona and Madrid, and in Catalan painting collections in Madrid, Bilbao and Latin America. In 1942 he won a special prize at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in Barcelona with his work Retrato . Works by Rafael Llimona hang in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, ​​in the Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa in Olot, in the Museu de l'Empordà in Figueres and in the Museu de Montserrat .

Rafael Llimona's father was the sculptor Josep Llimona i Bruguera . This was also his first art teacher. His sister was the sculptor Maria Llimona i Benet .
