Horta-Guinardó is a district of Barcelona in the north of the Catalan capital with 172,000 inhabitants (as of 2009). Horta was an independent village until it was incorporated in 1904. The place was first mentioned in 965. The name of the village comes from the Horta family, who ruled this area from 1036 to 1260. Horta flourished in the 17th century and was the home of numerous noble families and wealthy merchants.

In the 20th century, Horta grew rapidly and numerous laundries were built. In 1901 the place received a tram connection, in 1967 the Horta underground station was opened on today's L5 line.

Today's Plaça d'Eivissa in the Horta district was the town's marketplace until it was incorporated into Barcelona. The district headquarters are located in the southern part of the district in the listed Casa de les Altures in the Baix Guinardó district . The district is also home to Barcelona's oldest park, the Parc del Laberint d'Horta , which opened in 1799 , the Horta Velodrome built for the 1984 World Championships and the sports facilities at the Palau d'Esports Vall d'Hebron , built for the 1992 Olympics .
