Rafael Sánchez Cestero

Rafael Sánchez Cestero (born January 1, 1912 in Santo Domingo ; † August 7, 1999 ibid) was a Dominican singer (tenor).

Live and act

Sanchez studied from 1928 to 1934 in Paris and from 1935 with Bernard U. Taylor at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He also took private lessons here with Léon Rothier and Giuseppe Barsotti . He has performed at the New York Chamber Opera , Grand Opera , New York Civic Opera, and Salmaggie Opera . In Santo Domingo he sang in programs on Radio HIX , La Voz Dominicana , Rahintel and Color Visión as well as at the Teatro Independencia , the Teatro Rialto , the Teatro Nacional and the Palacio Nacional .

In 1957 he sang Alfred in Verdi's La traviata alongside Violeta Stephen and Tony Curiel , and in 1959 he performed Ninón Lapreiretta's Abominación de la espera . In 1960 he was a soloist in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional under Manuel Simó . In 1963 and 1964 he appeared in José de Jesús Castros La muerte de Cristo , in 1968 he sang the tenor part in Sunhara by Manuel Marino Miniño .

Sanchez founded the Compañía Lírica Dominicana in 1963 and the Ópera Dominicana in 1974 . Between 1958 and 1986 he taught at the Academia de La Voz Dominicana and at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música .
