Rafael Yglesias Castro
Rafael Yglesias Castro (born April 18, 1861 in San José ; † April 11, 1924 there ) was President of Costa Rica between May 8, 1894 and May 8, 1902 .
Life
His parents were Eudoxia Castro Fernández the daughter of José María Castro Madriz and Demetrio Yglesias Llorente. His sister married WH Lynn, his brothers were Carlos and Ricardo. He studied law at the Universidad de Santo Tomás . On January 7, 1893, Castro Manuela Rodríguez Alvarado married the daughter of José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón .
In November 1889 he was the ringleader in the uprising of the Partido Constitucional , which brought his father-in-law José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledón into the presidency. He was Minister for War and the Navy during his father-in-law's presidency.
Presidency
In the first round of the presidential election in 1894, the candidate of the Unión Católica José Gregorio Trejos Gutiérrez received more votes. Rafael Yglesias Castro became president of the Partido Civil as a candidate . He opened the Teatro Nacional and had the constitution changed in 1897 so that he could rule for another term. In the presidential election on December 12, 1897, he was the only eligible candidate.
In late 1898, Yglesias began a six-month trip abroad. He visited William McKinley , and West Point . The ambassador of Costa Rica in the USA was Joaquín Bernardo Calvo Mora , the Consul General of Costa Rica in the USA was Dr. Juan J. Ulloa. On January 9, 1899, he was received in Folkestone by Robert Follet Synge CMG of the British Treasury. On January 12, 1899, he had a conversation with the US Ambassador in London, Henry White and then at the British Foreign Office.
In 1900 the gold standard for the money creation of the Costa Rican Colón was introduced.
In 1909 and 1913 he was a candidate for the presidency. In 1917 he took part in a commission of former presidents who drafted a constitution. In 1919 he became the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Government of Costa Rica to Guatemala .
