The Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila ( Latin Pontificia et Regalis Sancti Thomæ Aquinatis Universitas Manilana , English Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas , Spanish Universidad de Santo Tomás ) in the Philippines is a private Catholic university run by the Dominican Order.

In terms of student numbers, it is one of the largest Catholic universities in the world. Founded in 1611, it is the oldest still existing university in the Philippines and Asia. The University of San Carlos in Cebu , which dates back to 1595 , did not become a university until 1948.

history

The foundation of the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario on April 28, 1611 goes back to Miguel de Benavidez OP , Archbishop of Manila . This was later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas , and the institution was named a university by Pope Innocent X in his letter In Supreminenti on November 20, 1645 , the second university in the Philippines and Asia, after the Universidad de San Ignacio, which was in closed in the 1770s.

The full name is Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomás, the Catholic University of the Philippines . She received the title Royal from King Charles III of Spain . on March 7, 1785; the title papal by Pope Leo XIII. on September 17, 1902 in his writing Quae Mari Sinico , and the annex Catholic University of the Philippines by Pope Pius XII. on April 27, 1947.

The university was originally located in the fortress of Intramuros in Manila . It was founded as a seminary , named and in the spirit of Thomas Aquinas . From 1871 degrees in medicine and pharmacy were offered, the first in colonial Asia. At the beginning of the 20th century, due to the growing number of students, the Dominicans acquired land on Sulucan Mountain in the Sampaloc district of Manila, and in 1927 a 22-hectare university site was built on. Female students have also been accepted since this year. Over the four centuries, the institution grew into a full university offering degrees in law, medicine, and various other academic fields. The university trained the Filipino elite, including later presidents. Some of its graduates were later canonized ( Lorenzo Ruiz ).

During World War II, the Japanese turned the campus into a concentration camp for civilians, foreigners, and prisoners of war. After the war, the university resumed its tradition and became one of the more prestigious in the country.

The following high-ranking personalities have visited the university: Pope Paul VI. on November 28, 1970, King Juan Carlos I of Spain in 1974 and 1995; Mother Teresa in January 1977 and November 1984 and Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981 and January 13, 1995.

After the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the University of Santo Tomas in Manila is now the second most important Pontifical University in the world.
