Raffaello Maffei
Raffaello Maffei OSM (also known as Raffaele Maffei da Volterra , Raffaello Volterrano and Volaterranus ; born February 17, 1451 in Rome , † January 25, 1522 in Volterra ) was an Italian humanist , writer , historian and theologian .
Life
Maffei worked at the court of Paul II , who appointed him scriptor apostolicus at the age of 18 , and where he studied philosophy and theology with Georgios Trapezuntios, among others . Maffei accompanied Luigi d'Aragona on his trip to Hungary. He later settled in Volterra . Maffei discovered the Etruscan stele of Avile Tite around 1494 and also made a copy of the inscription on the stele, which is one of the earliest copies of Etruscan texts. His collection of Etruscan artifacts also included the Kourotrophos Maffei , a marble statue of a woman with a child. He translated works from the Greek, wrote several theological writings and in 1506 published his main work Commentariorum urbanorum libri XXXVIII .
Maffei died at the age of 70 and was buried in the Church of San Lino in Volterra.
