Raghubar Das ( Hindi रघुवर दास , born May 3, 1955 near or in Jamshedpur , Bihar , today Jharkhand , India ) is an Indian politician. From December 28, 2014 to December 29, 2019, he was Chief Minister of the Indian state of Jharkhand .

biography

Raghubar Das was born in the south of the state of Bihar (today part of Jharkhand) as the fourth of six children into simple circumstances. His father, Chawan Das, was a worker in the Tata steelworks in Jamshedpur. His family belonged to the Teli- Hindu - caste , and was originally probably from neighboring Chhattisgarh . He first attended the Bhalubasa Harijan High School in Jamshedpur and then the Jamshedpur Co-operative College, where he obtained a B.Sc. and a law degree ( LL.B ). After graduating, he worked in the Tata steel mills. During the time of the state of emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977 , he participated in resistance actions and was therefore temporarily detained. In 1977 he joined the newly founded Janata Party . When the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) split off from the Janata Party in 1980, he was one of the first BJP members. In the following years, he gradually rose in the local party hierarchy of the BJP. In 1995 he was first set up as a BJP candidate in constituency 291-Jamshedpur in the parliamentary elections in Bihar. He won the constituency and was successful there in the following election in 2000. After the state of Jharkhand was formed from parts of Bihar in 2000, Das performed various functions in the governments of Jharkhand. In the elections to the parliament of Jharkhand in 2005, 2009 and 2014 he was successful in constituency 48-Jamshedpur East . From 2004 to 2005 and again in 2009 he was chairman of the regional party organization of the BJP in Jharkhand.

In the parliamentary election in Jharkhand on December 23, 2014, the BJP won 31.3% of the vote and 37 out of 81 constituencies (partly as a result of the Modi wave in the wake of the all-India parliamentary election 2014 ). On December 28, 2014, Raghubar Das was elected as the new Chief Minister to head a coalition government of the BJP and All Jharkhand Students Union . He was the first chief minister in Jharkhand who was not a native of the Adivasi tribal population. He was also the first chief minister to serve a full five-year term in the politically unstable state of Jharkhand. All of his predecessors had been voted out or resigned before the end of their term in office. The parliamentary election in Jharkhand in November / December 2019 was lost for him and the BJP. Das announced his resignation on December 23, 2019, but remained in office until his successor Hemant Soren was sworn in on December 29, 2019.
