Ragnar Sohlman (born February 26, 1870 in Stockholm , † July 9, 1948 in Solna , Sweden ) was a Swedish chemical engineer , civil servant and founder of the Nobel Foundation.

Life

Sohlman was the son of the well-known journalist August Sohlman and his wife Hulda Maria Sandeberg. In 1887 he enrolled at the Royal Stockholm University of Technology , where he graduated as a chemical engineer in 1890 . 1893 Sohlman assistant of Alfred Nobel .

In his will of November 27, 1895, Nobel awarded Sohlman 100,000 Swedish crowns and made him executor with Rudolf Liljequist . He assumed that Sohlman would spend most of the time doing this. Nobel died on December 10, 1896.

The sum of 100,000 crowns was a very high amount at the time and made Sohlman a rich man. The amount of money can be compared to the price of the first Nobel Prize in 1901, 150,782 crowns.

He co-founded the Nobel Foundation and spent the years 1896 to 1901 preparing for the award of the Nobel Prize. Sohlman was a member of the Nobel Foundation's Intermediate Committee.

Sohlman also made a career as an engineer and operations manager in noble-related companies such as Bofors. He was also the general director of the Swedish National Committee of Commerce from 1935 to 1936.

He was the responsible director of the Nobel Foundation between 1929 and 1946.
