Raiko Krauß (* 1973 in Berlin-Friedrichshain ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist .

Life

In 1992 Krauss passed the Abitur at the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium in Berlin-Friedrichshain. As a schoolboy he worked from 1988 to 1990 as part of vacation internships at the Antikensammlung of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and was involved in excavations at the Museum of Prehistory in Potsdam.

After doing community service in the emergency room of a Berlin hospital, Krauss began studying prehistory and early history and classical archeology at the Humboldt University in Berlin in the 1994 summer semester . There he also attended courses in Classical Philology, Ancient History and Philosophy as well as lectures in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the Free University of Berlin . From 1999–2000 he was employed as a student assistant at the Hermann von Helmholtz Center for Cultural Technology for the supervision of the teaching collection of the Chair for Prehistory and Protohistory and worked on excavation projects in Germany, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Romania and Turkey. In 2000 he completed his studies at the Humboldt University with a master's thesis on the Copper Age settlement of Djakovo in the Struma valley (Bulgaria).

In 2004, Krauss received his doctorate from Bernhard Hänsel and Hermann Parzinger at the Free University of Berlin with a dissertation on the subject of "The prehistoric settlement on the lower reaches of the Jantra". 2002–2004 he received a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He then worked at the Saxon State Office for Archeology at short notice in 2004. For his dissertation he was awarded the German Archaeological Institute's travel grant and spent a year traveling the countries of the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

From 2005 to 2008 Krauss was a research assistant at the Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute and from 2007 to 2008 also assistant at the Institute for Prehistoric Archeology at the Free University of Berlin . Since the winter semester 2008/09 he has been teaching and researching at the Institute for Prehistory and Early History and Archeology of the Middle Ages at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 2014 he was able to do a thesis on the “Dynamics of Neolithization in Southeast Europe. The beginning of agriculture, cattle breeding and sedentary lifestyle "habilitate and received the Venia Legendi for the subject of prehistory and early history. Krauß has been a Heisenberg fellow of the German Research Foundation since 2017 and an adjunct professor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen since November 2018.

Krauss's archaeological activities focus on the epochs from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age in Central and Southeastern Europe. Important research projects dealt with the early Neolithic settlement of Ovčarovo-Gorata (Bulgaria), the Copper to Early Bronze Age site of Foeni-Gaz (Romania) and the Copper Age burial ground of Varna (Bulgaria). For the supposedly early Neolithic figure ensemble from Belica (Serbia), he was able to prove that some of the finds were made in a modern way and thus partially confirm a forgery allegation made by Serbian colleagues. In cooperation with the Museum des Banat in Timišoara, he has been leading the excavations on the multi-phase prehistoric settlement Bucova Pusta IV (Romania) since 2010 and various excavations on Mesolithic-Early Neolithic sites in Baden-Württemberg together with the State Office for Monument Conservation. His teaching and research activities also focus on musical archeology and megalithics in North Africa.

Krauß is Vice President of the German-Bulgarian Society and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 2015 he received the plaque of honor from the municipality of Dudeștii Vechi (Romania).
