Bernhard Hansel

Bernhard Hänsel (born May 24, 1937 in Stuttgart ; † April 1, 2017 in Burow ) was a German prehistoric archaeologist .

Career

After studying at the Humboldt University of Berlin , the University of Jena , University of Vienna and the University of Heidelberg , he was in 1964 with a thesis entitled Contributions to the Chronology of the Middle Bronze Age in the Carpathian Basin doctorate . In 1964 he worked as an assistant at the University of Heidelberg before he took up the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute in 1965. 1966–1972 he was a university assistant in Bochum, then a lecturer in Erlangen (1973–1976). From 1976 to 1981 he was a full professor at the University of Kiel and from 1981 to his retirement in 2006 at the Free University of Berlin .

In the area of prehistory and early history as well as the prehistoric archeology of Southeast Europe , Professor Bernhard Hänsel was one of the international capacities. Over the decades he led and supervised excavation projects in Greece , Serbia , Croatia and Italy .

The current excavation, organized by both the professors of prehistoric archeology at FU Berlin, Hansel and Terzan in close cooperation with the Archaeological Museum in Pula , Croatia, aimed to research an early to mid-Bronze Age (approx. 1800 to 1300 BC). ) Fortified settlement of the Castelliere type near Rovinj in Istria in the Croatian Karst . Hansel's main research interests included the Bronze Age, the Early Iron Age , especially in Southeastern Europe, their settlement archeology, the associated chronology and hoard finds . Bernhard Hansel also took part in the Troy debate .

His early contribution to Heligoland research was also important . In 1978 he wanted to show that Heligoland was a copper supplier in the Middle Ages and put forward the thesis that Heligoland was integrated into the trading network of the Nordic Bronze Age . He continued to work in this area of ​​research: the literature about a stone box grave on the island was known, but the find had been forgotten in the Berlin Museum of Prehistory and Early History . Together with his wife Alix Hansel , he reinterpreted this stone box after its rediscovery in 2009. Theses on Heligoland copper are discussed critically following Jürgen Spanuth .

In the course of reform efforts in German archeology, Hansel was a founding member and second deputy chairman of the German Society for Prehistory and Early History on October 25, 1969 . Jens Lüning was elected first deputy chairman and Winrich Schwellnus took over the chairmanship. and 1970 founder and spokesman of the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bronzezeit". As a further reform project, the journal Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt appeared from 1971 on, in whose creation he contributed and for which he was editor for the Bronze Age. In 1989, together with Jens Lüning, the publication series "University research on prehistoric archeology" was founded by Habelt-Verlag.

Bernhard Hänsel received an honorary doctorate from the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the University of Bucharest . He was a member of the Polish Academy of Learning (PAU) in Cracow and the Saxon Academies of Sciences .

On April 4, 2017 Bernhard Hänsel was awarded honorary membership of the ÖGUF (Austrian Society for Prehistory and Protohistory ) (laudation Barbara Horejs ).
