Wolfram Schier

Wolfram Schier (born June 26, 1957 in Hohenbrunn ) is a German prehistoric scientist .

Wolfram Schier studied prehistory and early history , ethnology and soil science at the universities of Munich , Saarbrücken and Oxford between 1975 and 1981 . He completed his studies in Munich in 1981 with a master's degree and received his doctorate there four years later. He then became an assistant there. For his dissertation, The Prehistoric Settlement in the Southern Main Triangle , he was awarded the 1991 Kurt Bittel Prize for South German Classical Studies from the city of Heidenheim an der Brenz . In 1986/87 Schier traveled to the Iberian Peninsula , North Africa , Yemen , Jordan , Syria , Turkey , Cyprus and Greece as holder of the travel grant of the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) . After returning, Schier became an assistant at the University of Heidelberg . There he completed his habilitation in 1996 and then became curator of the collection of the University of Bonn . In 1998 Schier became a C-3 professor at the University of Bamberg , but in the same year switched to the University of Würzburg as a C-4 professor . In 2004 he turned down a call to the University of Kiel . In 2006 he became a W-3 professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Schier's research focuses on the Neolithic of Central and Southeastern Europe , the diachronic and comparative settlement and landscape archeology , the multidisciplinary and experimental research into prehistoric agriculture and the social structures and social change in the Central European Iron Age . Since 1999 Schier has been a member of the Collegial Commission of the Commission for Archeology of Non-European Cultures of the DAI and a full member of the DAI. From 1999 to 2002 he was the spokesman for the Association of German University Lecturers for Archeology , and from 2000 to 2011 he was Vice President of the Presidium of German Associations for Archeology . In 2005 he was named commander of the Romanian Order of Meritul Cultural , in 2006 Schier was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universitatea de Vest in Timișoara . Schier has been chairman of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory since 2014 .
