Raymond IV (Tripoli)

Raimund of Antioch († May / June 1199 ) was Raimund IV. Count of Tripoli from 1187 to 1189, and regent of the Principality of Antioch from 1193 to 1194.

He was the eldest of two sons of Prince Bohemond III. and Orgueilleuse by Harenc .

Life

He was knighted in 1186. He was the godson of Count Raimund III. from Tripoli. When he died in 1187 with no descendants, he left his county to Raymond of Antioch. After two years, his father Bohemond III moved. however, to have his heir close by and ordered him back to Antioch. In his place, Raimund's younger brother Bohemond IV of Antioch was installed as Bohemond I of Tripoli .

When his father was captured by Prince Leo II in the struggle against the Principality of Lesser Armenia in 1193 , he took over the reign of Antioch until his return in 1194. To end the crisis with his Armenian neighbors, he married Alix of Armenia , Leo's niece, daughter of Ruben III , in 1195 . and Isabella of Toron . The couple had a son, Raimund II. Ruben (* 1199, † 1221). Raimund died in the year his son was born, and his widow married Vahram von Korykos a year later.

Thus he died before his father, so that after his death in 1201 his brother as Bohemond IV of Antioch inherited the principality. Raimund's son Raimund II. Ruben later competed with his uncle Bohemund IV, claimed the prince's throne in Antioch based on the rights of his father and was able to occupy it temporarily from 1216 to 1219.
