Rainer Schmiedchen

Rainer Schmiedchen (born June 1, 1960 in Potsdam ) is a German diplomat and has been consul general in Karachi since 2015 . Schmiedchen was Consul General in Calcutta from 2011 to 2015 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Schmiedchen did his military service from 1979 to 1982 and then completed a degree in South Asian Studies , which he graduated with a diploma. He then worked as an assistant to the board of a foreign trade company between 1987 and 1991 and also completed a postgraduate degree in foreign trade theory from 1989 to 1990 .

In 1991 he joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his career test for the higher civil service, was a consultant in the Department for South Asia of the Foreign Office from 1993 to 1994 and then until 1997 at the Embassy in Sri Lanka . In 1997 he was appointed consul at the Consulate General in Novosibirsk , before he returned to the Foreign Office between 2000 and 2004 and worked for the European Commission in Brussels from 2004 to 2007 .

Subsequently, after being employed as deputy head of department in the Foreign Office, he was political advisor at the German Bundestag between 2008 and 2010 and then again deputy head of department in the Foreign Office until 2011.

From 2011 to 2015 Rainer Schmiedchen was Consul General in Calcutta. In this role, he also campaigned for the strengthening of economic relations between India and Germany and took part in events organized by the Germany Trade & Invest organization in Calcutta. The Consulate General also supports local business enterprises.
