Kõvamees made her debut before the Second World War with short prose, which she published in magazines. However, she only gained greater fame with her novels published in exile, in which she thematizes the life of the rural population on the Estonian island of Muhu. The first two novels, which a critic called the "Chronicle or Epic of the Women of Muhu", deserve special mention. However, he and another critic complained about the large number of people who made the work confusing. Nevertheless, the two novels were also characterized in the review of a later new edition as "perfect ethnographic novel".

In her later novels, the author moved the plot to the mainland, although the main characters are from Muhu. The double novel Teela (1965) and Das Erbteil (1969) focuses on the struggle for survival of a maid at the side of an incompetent but distinctly older man. Kõvamees also wrote plays dealing with the lives of the most exiles. Her writing style has been compared to August Mälk and the Finnish-Swedish writer Sally Salminen .
