Raj Bagri, Baron Bagri

Raj Kumar Bagri, Baron Bagri , CBE (born August 24, 1930 in Calcutta , British India , † April 26, 2017 in London ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and entrepreneur .

Career

Bagri comes from a middle class Indian family . His father died when Bagri was three years old. He left school at the age of 15 and began training with Metal Distrubutors , a Calcutta-based metal trading company . He worked there as a warehouse worker and in the archive . At the age of 19 he became an employee in the sales department. In the 1950s, Bagri traveled to London several times on behalf of Metal Distrubutors to establish business contacts with British companies. In 1959, Bagri opened his own Metal Distributors office in London. In the period that followed, his company mainly acted as a link between companies in Great Britain and smelting plants in India.

1970 Bagri founded the Metdist Group and was its chairman ( Chairman ). Bagri was from 1993 to 2002 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the London Metal Exchange ( The London Metal Exchange Ltd ). Previously, he was Director there from 1983 to 2002 and Vice-Chair from 1990 to 1993 . From 2003 to 2006 he was Honorary President there .

In 1995 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire . He was a member of the Advisory Committee of The Prince's Trust and was a member of the Governing Body of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London from 1997 to 2007 . He was also chairman of the Bagri Foundation. Bagri has also served on the City University Court , Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in the UK, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the non-profit Sangam Association of Asian Women .

It was in 1999 with the honorary degree as Doctor of Science ( Doctor of Science ) from City University and the 2000 University of Nottingham excellent. In 2004 he became an Honorable Fellow of the London Business School .

Bagri has been married to Usha Maheshwary since 1954 and has a son and a daughter.

Membership in the House of Lords

In the New Year's Honors List in 1997 his collection was announced to the peerage. That same year he was named a Life Peer as Baron Bagri , of Regent's Park in the City of Westminster . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on November 23, 1999. He last spoke on March 21, 2000.

He voted against his party several times. He was last present for a vote on January 25, 2010. He resigned from the House of Lords on July 6, 2010 to avoid UK taxation of his wealth .
