Rajapalayam is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

The city is the capital of the Virudhunagar district . Rajapalayam has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 42 wards (constituencies).

The dog breed Rajapalayam originates from the city.

history

Rajapalayam's residents were originally from the Vijayanagara Empire . Krishnadevaraya , the Maharaja of the empire, sent five military commandos to the kingdom of Madurai Nayak to maintain law and order in the southern part of the kingdom, in the region of today's Sivagiri . Around the time of the Battle of Talikota (1565), more people from the Vijayanagar Empire migrated south and settled in Pudupalayam in the western part of the Rajapalayam municipality.

Rajapalayam was established as the United Board in 1885. In 1930 it became a Panchayat Board. The railroad reached Rajapalayam in 1927 and the city was electrified in 1937.

Demographics

The city's population is 130,442 according to the 2011 census. Rajapalayam has a gender ratio of 1014 women per 1000 men and thus a rare excess of women for India. The literacy rate was 85.48% in 2011. Almost 95% of the population are Hindus , approx. 3% are Muslims and approx. 2% belong to another or no religion. 8.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

economy

The main line of business was initially agriculture . In 1936 the first cotton mill was founded in the city. Today the economy is based on textile production: in the city there are several spinning and weaving mills for cotton as well as a large cotton market.

Infrastructure

The National Highway from Tirumangalam to Kollam runs through the city. The state road SH-41 (Rajapalayam-Sankarankovil-Tirunelveli) connects the city with the extreme south of Tamil Nadu, including Tirunelveli , Tuticorin and Kanyakumari .

Rajapalayam Station is in the Southern Railways Zone of Indian Railways and is on the Virudhunagar to Kollam line.
