Ralf Loddenkemper Prize
The Ralf Loddenkemper Prize was a medical prize for extraordinary progress in the field of trauma surgery , in particular traumatology in childhood and adolescence. It was endowed with up to 30,000 Swiss francs, making it the most valuable award in the field of trauma surgery and orthopedics. The handover took place within the framework of the joint annual congress of the Pediatric Traumatology Section of the German Society for Trauma Surgery and the Association for Pediatric Orthopedics (Section of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery ).
Since 2001 it has been advertised annually by the Ralf Loddenkemper Foundation in the European Journal of Trauma and other specialist journals. Since 2010, the award has been made for scientific work and projects that bring about clinical progress in the field of trauma surgery in children and adolescents, especially for those who are dedicated to the prevention of accidents with serious consequences, as well as those from the field of experimental and clinical basic research on the growing musculoskeletal system in relation to trauma. All basic researchers or clinicians working at European clinics or research institutes could apply. In 2011 the tender was changed significantly; Since then, the prize has only been awarded in 2013, and then no more. Instead of the annual competition, a collaboration with the University Children's Hospital in Basel (UKBB) has now come about. Among other things, it runs a research project on the modeling of muscle functions when walking.
The Ralf Loddenkemper Foundation, based in Basel (Switzerland), was founded in 1985 by Haide and Gerd Loddenkemper from Oelde (Germany) in memory of their 16-year-old son who died as a result of a traffic accident. In addition to the award ceremony, the foundation promotes medical research in the field of trauma surgery and supports organizations that help severely accident-damaged children and adolescents with healing and rehabilitation , as well as institutions that pursue the same or similar tasks.
The president of the foundation is Claudia Loddenkemper, the jury chairman of the Ralf Loddenkemper Prize was Lutz von Laer (from 1976 to 2000 medical director of the trauma department at the Orthopedic UKBB, from 1991 to 2000 professor at the medical faculty of the University of Basel ).
