Live and act

Küppers obtained a diploma in biology from the University of Cologne in 1989 . He received his PhD in 1995 at the same place Klaus Rajewsky to Dr. rer. nat. , Here he developed a method for the molecular biological detection of Hodgkin cells and Sternberg-Reed giant cells, the cellular malignant correlate of Hodgkin's disease . From 1996 to 2002 he was group leader in the Collaborative Research Center 502 “Molecular Aspects of the Pathogenesis, Diagnostics and Therapy of Hodgkin's Disease and Related Diseases”. In 1999 , Küppers completed his habilitation in genetics at the University of Cologne . From 1999 to 2003 he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2000/2001 Küppers had a six-month sabbatical with Riccardo Dalla-Favera at Columbia University in New York City .

In 2004, Küppers received a C4 professorship for " Molecular Genetics " at the Institute for Cell Biology at the University Hospital Essen as successor to Manfred F. Rajewsky , which he still holds today (as of 2016). His fields of work are the development and differentiation of B-lymphocytes in humans, the biology of the infection of B-lymphocytes with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and other EBV-associated diseases, the pathogenesis of B-cell lymphomas , especially the Hodgkin's disease.
