Ralph J. Block

Ralph J. Block (born June 21, 1889 in Cherokee , Iowa , † January 2, 1974 in Wheaton , Maryland ) was an American film producer , screenwriter and president of the Screen Actors Guild .

Life

In the 1920s, Block attracted attention as a film producer. His first film as a producer was the athletic drama The Quarterback (1926) directed by Fred C. Newmeyer . Barton MacLane played his first film role in it. The films Skyscraper and The Cop , produced by Block, were nominated for an Oscar in 1930 in the "Best Screenplay" category.

From 1930 onwards he shifted his engagement mainly to writing scripts. He wrote his first screenplay for the 1930 film The Arizona Kid with Warner Baxter and Carole Lombard in the leading roles. In 1934 he wrote the screenplay for the film The player ( Gambling Lady ), in which Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea very front were on the cast list. For Nancy Goes to Rio , based on a story by Sidney Sheldon , he contributed his work on the script in 1950.

From 1934 to 1935 Block was president of the Screen Actors Guild, which earned him great fame in the industry. In 1940, Block was awarded an honorary Oscar for his dedicated work for the Motion Picture Relief Fund , a fund that raises money for needy workers in the film industry.

In 1910, Block married Mary Greenacre, who died in 1972. Ralph J. Block also died two years later.
