Ramón Jaffé

Ramón Jaffé (born November 2, 1962 in Riga ) is a Latvian-German-Israeli cellist , flamenco and chamber musician .

Life

At the age of four Ramón Jaffé received his first music lessons from his father Don Jaffé , who assisted him as a teacher until he graduated. In the early 1970s, the family moved from Latvia to Israel and after the Yom Kippur War to Germany.

In 1978 Ramón Jaffé, together with the pianist Marcus Pawlik, received second prize in the International Radio Competition for Young Musicians Concertino Praga . From 1979 to 1983 he studied with his father at the University of the Arts in Bremen and later with Sándor Végh at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He was a master student at Daniil Borisovich Shafran and David Geringas . In 1988 he obtained his concert exam with Boris Mironowitsch Pergamenschtschikow in Cologne. His solo career began during his studies. In 1984 he won 2nd place at the German Music Competition and in 1985 3rd prize at the Casals Competition in Budapest . With the Piano Trio Salzburg , he achieved 2nd place at the Sergio Lorenzi International Chamber Music Competition in Trieste in 1986 . As a chamber musician , he has also given concerts with the Belcanto Strings String Trio and the Mendelssohn Trio Berlin .

The orchestras that Ramón had a collaboration with include: a. the DSO & BSO Berlin, Mozarteum Salzburg, Camerata Academica Salzburg, the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. In 2004 he performed with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic . He played a concert at the Wiener Musikverein as part of the Wiener Festwochen. He performed with the Munich Radio Orchestra under the direction of conductors Roberto Abbado , Marcello Viotti and Lawrence Foster . Other conductors with whom he has performed are Andrei Boreiko , HK Gruber , Michail Jurowski , Leif Segerstam , Stefan Blunier and Ralf Weikert .

Ramón Jaffé founded the Hopfgarten Chamber Music Festival in Tyrol in 1995 together with the local pastor Nikolaus Erber, Benjamin Schmid and Hansjörg Weisskopf, of which he is still the artistic director. For this activity, the state of Tyrol awarded him the Tyrolean Eagle Order in silver in 2015 . From 2011 to 2019 he directed the Middelburg Festival in the Dutch province of Zeeland. In September 2020, Ramón Jaffé and his daughter Serafina took over the artistic direction of the newly founded Chamber Music Festival Oberlausitz .

In addition to the classical repertoire, Ramón Jaffé has given concerts with the jazz singer Bobby McFerrin and the sitar virtuoso Pradeep Ratnayake as well as with the flamenco guitarist Pedro Bacan († 1997). He continues his flamenco concerts with the dancer Miguelete and the guitarist Johannes Hoffmann as the Ramón Jaffé Trio .

Ramón Jaffé teaches at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden .

His daughter Serafina Jaffé (born October 31, 1998 in Berlin) also studied cello and harp . Father and daughter also perform together.
