Kai Kupferschmidt (born 1982 in Bonn ) is a German science journalist .

Life, work

Kupferschmidt attended schools in Meckenheim, London and Potsdam. From 2004 to 2008 he studied molecular biomedicine at the University of Bonn , after which he completed an apprenticeship at the Berlin School of Journalism . Since 2009 he has been living as a freelance journalist in Berlin. He works for the Tagesspiegel , Die Zeit , the SZ , the Sunday newspaper , the Stuttgarter Zeitung and for Bild der Wissenschaft . His work focuses on nutrition , infectious diseases , brain research , molecular biology and biotechnology . He regularly moderates events of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , Urania , Tagesspiegel and other organizers. Since 2011 he has been a correspondent for Science magazine .

On February 24, 2020, he published an analysis of the coronavirus epidemic in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit under the title Containing was yesterday . The scenario outlined by Kupferschmidt was fully confirmed on the following day by positive diagnoses in an additional four regions of Italy and six countries in Europe, and in some cases even exceeded.
