The Rama III Bridge ( Thai สะพาน พระราม 3 , other names: "New Krungthep Bridge" - สะพาน กรุงเทพ ใหม่ or "Krungthep Bridge No. 2" - สะพาน กรุงเทพ 2 ) is a bridge over the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) in Bangkok , the capital of Thailand . It leads from the district ( Khet ) Bang Kho Laem to Thonburi and runs parallel to the Krungthep Bridge, which opened in 1959 .

The construction work began on October 1st, 1996 and lasted until October 1999. Around 75,000 cubic meters of concrete were used. The grand opening took place on March 30, 2000.

The Rama III bridge is designed as a cantilever box girder bridge and has six lanes for car traffic. The length of the main bridge is 2,170 meters, its width is 23 meters and the clear height is 32 meters. Together with the driveways in Thonburi and Bang Kho Laem, the bridge is 4,271 meters long. The span of the main field is 226 m.
