He wasinitiatedinto the tradition of yoga by Bengali Baba in early childhood. Since early childhood he has practiced the various disciplines of yoga in monasteries in the Himalayas and is considered an important representative of the Sri Vidya tradition.

Life and teaching

In his childhood and adolescence, Swami Rama lived and traveled as an orphan with mendicants, yogis and sadhus from Garhwal , Kumaon , Kangra Valley , Kashmir , Ladakh and Tibet and other parts of India. His teachers included Ramana Maharshi , Aurobindo , Anandamayi Ma, and Rabindranath Tagore . In Tibet he completed his studies with his grand master, who was also the direct teacher of Mahavatar Babaji .

Between 1938 and 1944 Swami Rama taught Vedic-Hindu and Buddhist scriptures in various monasteries. At the age of 24, Swami Rama became the Shankaracharya of Karvirpitham in South India, one of the highest spiritual positions in India. In 1952 he gave up the office, married and started a family. He later left to return to the Himalayas and continue his spiritual practice. In 1969 he traveled to the USA for the first time. He founded the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy (now short: Himalayan Institute ), with centers around the world.

In 1993 he finally returned to India to realize his plan to build a hospital for people living at the foot of the Himalayas, the Himalayan Institute Hospital .

Swami Rama founded various organizations. He spread his teachings in writings and lectures. He taught that one should know oneself at all levels and stated, “After visiting hundreds of countries, I have found that there is a big problem everywhere and that is that man has not yet got to know himself and understood and instead tried to understand God and others ”.

After his death in 1996, his students continued to work to pass on the tradition of the Himalayan yogis in the spirit of his teacher. One of his students, Veda Bharati († 2015), was active worldwide for over 60 years. Swami Rama's successor as head of the Himalayan Institute in the USA, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait , continues to teach worldwide and leads humanitarian projects worldwide (focus on India, Central America and especially Africa) in the spirit of Swami Rama.
