Maimonides Hospital - Human Health Medical Campus ( Hebrew רַמְבָּ"ם - הַקִּרְיָה הָרְפוּאִית לִבְרִיאוּת הָאָדָם RaMBa "M - ha-Qirjah ha-Rəfū'īt li-Vrī'ūt ha-'Adam ; English Rambam Health Care Campus ), also Rambam Hospital or simply Rambam , is located on the Bay of Haifa in the Bat Gallim district in Haifa ( Israel ).

It is the largest hospital in northern Israel and the fifth largest in all of Israel. It was named after the doctor and philosopher R abbi M osche B en- M aimon ( R a MB a M ; 1138–1204), also known as Maimonides .

Facilities

Rambam Hospital is a Level I trauma center. Around 75,000 people are admitted here every year and another 500,000 are treated in the outpatient clinics and medical institutes. The Technion Medical School - the Rappaport Faculty - is next to the hospital. It has 36 departments with around 1000 beds, nine institutes and six laboratories.

The Meyer Children's Clinic, the only hospital in northern Israel dedicated solely to pediatric medicine, is located on the Rambam Health Care Campus. It was founded in 1986 to treat children aged 0-16.

The National AIDS Institute is affiliated with the Rambam Hospital .

history

The Rambam Hospital was founded in 1938 during the British Mandate on a crescent-shaped headland at the foot of the Carmel Mountains , northwest of the port of Haifa. The architect Erich Mendelsohn took over the planning for the hospital construction .

Initially with 225 beds, it was inaugurated as the British Government Hospital of Haifa by the High Commissioner of Palestine Harold MacMichael .

After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the hospital was named after Rambam.

extension

In October 2010, work began on a protected underground hospital that is said to be able to withstand conventional, chemical and biological attacks. The hospital should then have an autonomous power and oxygen supply, drinking water and medical supplies for up to three days.

Part of the project is also a three-story car park that can be converted into a 2,000-bed hospital at short notice if necessary.
