Ramnulf I (Poitou)

Ramnulf I of Poitou , also called Ranulf or Rainulf , (* around 820; † September 15, 866 ) was a Count of Poitou from 839 to 866 and abbot of Saint-Hilaire-de-Poitiers from the family from 841 to 866 Ramnulfiden .

Life

Ramnulf was the son of Count Gerhard von Auvergne (X 841) and a daughter of Louis the Pious . After the deposition of King Pippin II of Aquitaine in 839, he received the county of Poitou from his imperial grandfather . In 864 he took Pippin II prisoner and handed him over to King Charles the Bald . Constantly fighting the invading Normans , Ramnulf fell together with Margrave Robert the Brave at the Battle of Brissarthe (866) after an arrow hit.

Ramnulf established his family's outstanding position of power in western Aquitaine and temporarily held the title of Dux himself .

He was married to Bilchilde, a daughter of Count Roricos I of Maine from the Rorgonids family . They had three children:

  • Ramnulf II (around 855 - August 5, 890), Count of Poitou
  • Gauzbert († 892), in the fight against King Odo killed
  • Ebalus († October 2, 892), Abbot of St. Germain (881), St. Denis (886) and St. Hilaire (889). Chancellor of King Odo since 888, but then killed in battle against him.
