Ranaghat is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .

The city belongs to the Nadia district . Ranaghat has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 19 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 75,365 and that of the metropolitan area is 234,499. Ranaghat has a gender ratio of 986 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 93.2% in 2011. Almost 97% of the population are Hindus , around 2% are Muslims and around 1% belong to another or no religion. 6.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.

Infrastructure

It is one of the main railway junctions on the Sealdah - Murshidabad railway section . The Maitree Express , which connects Kolkata and Dhaka , runs through Ranaghat. It was put back into operation in 2008.
