Randa Abdel-Fattah

Randa Abdel-Fattah (born June 6, 1979 in Sydney , New South Wales ) is an Australian author with Palestinian and Egyptian parents. Her debut novel "Does My Head Look Big in This?" Was published in 2005.

Youth and education

Abdel-Fattah grew up in Melbourne and attended a Catholic elementary school and an Islamic secondary school, from which she graduated with an International Baccalaureate . In the sixth grade she wrote her first attempt at a novel based on Roald Dahl's novel “ Matilda ”. As a teenager, she created short stories and wrote the first draft of "Does My Head Look Big in This?" At the age of 18.

Abdel-Fattah holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Melbourne . During this time she worked as a media liaison officer in the public relations department of the Islamic Council of Victoria (Islamic Council of the Australian state of Victoria ). This role gave her the opportunity to write for newspapers and get media institutions to look into her portrayal of Muslims and Islam. Abdel-Fattah was a passionate human rights activist. She participated in the 1998 Australian federal election as a member of the small Australian multicultural Unity Party . Her slogan was: "Say no to Pauline Hanson ". She was also very interested in inter-religious dialogue and was a member of various inter-religious networks. Abdel-Fattha volunteered in numerous human rights and immigrant organizations, including the Australian Arabic Council, the Victorian Migrant Resource Center , the Islamic Women's Welfare Council , the Palestine Human Rights Campaign and the Asylum Seeker Resource Center .

Abdel-Fattah is a sought-after media commentator on topics related to Palestine, Islam or Australian Muslims. On television she was seen on the programs " Insight " ( SBS ), " First Tuesday Book Club " ( Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)), the talk show " Q & A " (ABC), " Sunrise " ( Seven Network ) and " 9am with David & Kim " ( Network Ten ). She is a regular guest at schools across Australia, where she speaks to students about her books and the social issues they cover. She has been a guest at literary festivals in Sweden (Gothenburg 2007, “LitteraLund” in Lund 2008), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur 2008), Brunei and the United Kingdom.
