Rangeen Gate

The Rangeen Gate or Rangeen Darwaza in the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra is one of the former 52 gates of the city. It faces north, that is, towards the cities of Jalgaon , Indore or Ujjain .

location

The Rangeen Gate was close to the Kille Ark , the former residence of the Grand Mughal . Today the Government College of Arts & Science is located here .

history

The Mughal Mughal Aurangzeb (r. 1658–1707) had the city on the Deccan and later named after him expanded like a fortress in the 1680s and 1690s and surrounded by a city wall to protect it from attacks by the Marathas ; 13 preserved city gates belong to this.

architecture

Like almost all buildings of Mughal architecture , the core of the Rangeen Gate , which is around 30 m wide, 10 m deep and 15 m high, is made of bricks . These were clad with precisely hewn stone or plastered. The middle passage is about 6 m wide and 7 m high; above it is a wide battlement , while the laterally protruding bastions each have platforms on which cannons used to stand. All three components are structured by blind arcades and crowned by battlements .
