Ernest Ranglin (born June 19, 1932 in Manchester / Jamaica ) is a Jamaican ska and jazz guitarist.

Ranglin already played in childhood passionate Ukelele , in his youth he joined in Jamaica and the Bahamas on - often with the musician Monty Alexander . His musical career began in the 1950s, as with many Caribbean musicians, as a guitarist and arranger in Jamaican hotel bands that play a mix of jazz and Caribbean rhythms to entertain tourists. He made his first recordings for the sound systems of Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd , Duke Reid and Prince Buster in the late 1950s . As the arranger in Clement Dodd's “ Studio One ”, he set the tone for the ska of the 1960s. He worked with all of Jamaica's major ska musicians such as Prince Buster, the saxophonist Roland Alphonso and Byron Lee . Next he was part of the Jamaican Big Band by Sonny Bradshaw .

One of his greatest successes is the production of the world hit My Boy Lollipop (1964) for the singer Millie Small . In the same year he played for nine months as a jazz guitarist in the famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London . In the 1960s and 1970s Ranglin turned increasingly to jazz, lived temporarily in London and New York, but continued to work as a studio musician in Kingston / Jamaica, where he was involved in more than 25 Ska , Rocksteady and Reggae albums was. Ranglin performed in London at the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, the owner of which signed him for several months.

Other musical milestones in Ernest Ranglin's life are Rivers of Babylon with the Melodians , the lead guitar for Hurts to be Alone with the Wailers , in the 1970s he toured with Jimmy Cliff , and in 1973 he received an award for his musical from the Jamaican government Merits.
