The heart-leaved buttercup ( Ranunculus parnassiifolius ) is a species of the genus buttercup ( Ranunculus ).
features
The heart-leaved buttercup is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 4 to 10, rarely up to 20 centimeters. The plant forms a rhizome . The leaves are entire. The basal leaves are not divided. The basal leaf blade is ovate-heart-shaped or broadly lanceolate. The stem leaves are surrounding the stem. The flower stalks are woolly haired above. The sepals are hairy. The fruits are smooth.
The flowering time is in July.
The species occurs diploid, tetraploid and pentaploid; their chromosome number is 2n = 16, 32 or 40.
Occurrence
The species occurs in the mountains of northern Spain, in the Pyrenees and in the Alps. It is limestone and grows on alpine fresh rock debris at altitudes of 1700 to 2900 meters. It is a character species of Leontodontetum montani from the association Thlaspion rotundifolii.
Subspecies
There are four subspecies in Europe:
- Ranunculus parnassiifolius subsp. cabrerensis Rothm. , occurs only in northern Spain
- Ranunculus parnassiifolius subsp. favargeri Küpfer , occurs only in Spain and France
- Ranunculus parnassiifolius subsp. heterocarpus Küpfer , occurs only in Spain, France and the Alps
- Ranunculus parnassiifolius subsp. parnassiifolius , occurs only in the Pyrenees of Spain and France
use
The heart-leaved buttercup is rarely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens. The 'Semiplenus' variety has semi-double flowers.
