Raoul de Gacé
Raoul de Gacé († 1051 ) was a Norman nobleman from the Rolloniden family . He was lord of Gacé , Écouché , Bavent , Varenguebec and Noyon-sur-Andelle ; He is best known as the guardian of Duke Wilhelm II of Normandy (who later became William the Conqueror). He was the son of Robert the Dane , Count of Évreux and Archbishop of Rouen , and Herleva, his brother was Count Richard of Évreux .
biography
As the younger son of Roberts, he received the Gacé fief when his father died, while his older brother inherited the county of Évreux. This line of succession took place at a time of great uncertainty in the Duchy of Normandy, after Duke Robert I set out on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and died on the way (1035). Although he had his underage son Wilhelm recognized as his successor by the barons of Normandy, some did not keep their oath after the change of government, rose and plunged Normandy into anarchy up to 1047.
Raoul de Gacé did not openly take part in the revolt, but went the direct route to power: together with Robert de Vitot, he achieved the assassination of Gilbert de Brionne , the young Duke's guardian, and sat himself - with the title of a Connétable of Normandy - in its place. In 1042 he managed to break the resistance of the Goz family under the leadership of Turstin Goz, Viscount d'Hiémois , whom he besieged in the Falaise fortress . He took advantage of his position to pull the hiémois to him. In the later dispute between the House of Beaumont and the House of Tosny , he shared the estate of the defeated Tosnys with his brother.
After taking office, Duke Wilhelm disempowered him, but left him with his property so that he could withdraw to his estates while he expropriated Robert de Vitot and sent him into exile.
progeny
Raoul married Basilie, daughter of Gérard Flaitel. Her son was Robert († 1064), Seigneur de Gacé, de Varenguebec, de Noyon, etc., who appointed his uncle Richard as heir, but this was not accepted by Duke Wilhelm. He withdrew the estate, but gave it in 1089 due to an arrangement for the marriage of Bertrada von Montfort to Count Wilhelm von Évreux , Richard's son, after all.
Basilie married Hugues de Gournay for the second time
