Raphael Christians
Raphael Christen (born July 16, 1811 in Basel , † January 14, 1880 in Bern ) was a Swiss sculptor .
He was the son of the sculptor Joseph Maria Christen . He completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Valentin Sonnenschein and Joseph Simon Volmar in Bern .
Karl Viktor von Bonstetten made it possible for him to stay in Rome , where he continued his education at Bertel Thorvaldsen . After that he was a teacher at the wood carving school in Brienz for a short time and finally settled in Bern. He created numerous busts, including a. 1847 by Guillaume-Henri Dufour and around 1848 by Friedrich Frey-Herosé . His most important works include four statues on the facade of the Swiss National Bank , two round medallions at the Kunstmuseum Bern and the bronze statue of Berna des Bernabrunnen .
Further works are two reliefs on the Père Girard monument in Friborg (Switzerland) from 1861. One depicts Père Girard as the educator of the children, the other the scholar in his study.
