Raphoe Castle (also Bishop's Palace ,, Irish Caisleán Ráth Bhoth ) is the ruin of a lowland castle on the outskirts of Raphoe in Ireland's County Donegal .
history
The castle was built in the 1630s for The Rt. Rev. Dr. John Leslie , Anglican Bishop of Raphoe , built from the stones of a round tower . Bishop Leslie was besieged at the castle during the 1641 Rebellion until he was freed by the Laggan Army . Leslie came under siege again, during the reconquest of Ireland ; the castle was handed over to the besiegers in 1650.
Supporters of the Anglo-Scottish King James II and James VII damaged Raphoe Castle in the War of the Two Kings in 1689 . A century later, in 1789, the castle was attacked again, this time by the United Irishmen , three of whom were killed in the 1798 Rebellion . In 1838 the castle was destroyed by a fire.
