The Rapid Creek is a left tributary of the Cheyenne River in the southwest of the US state of South Dakota .

River course

Rapid Creek arises in the Black Hills at the confluence of its two headwaters, North Fork and South Fork Rapid Creek . The river flows through the mountains in an easterly direction. After about 25 km it is dammed up to Pactola Lake . After another 25 km, the river leaves the hill country and reaches the town of Rapid City at the foot of the Black Hills . In Rapid City is the small reservoir Canyon Lake . After leaving the city, the Rapid River flows mainly in an east-south-east direction through the plains, with a strongly meandering behavior. About 50 km east-southeast of Rapid City, the Rapid Creek finally flows into the Cheyenne River.

Hydrology

The Rapid Creek has a catchment area of about 1840 km². The mean discharge 36 km above the mouth is 2.3 m³ / s. The annual runoff can vary greatly.

On June 9, 1972, the Canyon Lake dam burst , in which the city of Rapid City was partially flooded.
