Rapport (weekly newspaper)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rapport is the only supraregional African-language South African weekly newspaper with the exception of the tabloid Die Son , which is actually a daily newspaper in the Western Cape , but outside of this province, with the exclusive distribution of the Friday edition, can be considered a weekly newspaper. The newspaper is also distributed in Namibia , where Afrikaans is a common lingua franca. Rapport's editorial office is in Johannesburg and Tim du Plessis is the editor-in-chief. The circulation in 2006 was 313,528 copies.

The newspaper emerged in 1970 from a merger of the Sunday newspapers Die Beeld (founded in 1965) and Dagbreek (founded in 1947). The two newspaper publishers "Nasionale Pers" (Die Beeld) and "Perskor" (Dagbreek) each took half of Rapport , but remained competitors outside of this newspaper. “Pextor” merged with the competitor “Caxton” in 1998 to form “Caxton Pextor”, this company sold its shares in Rapport in 1999 to its partner, who was now called “ Naspers ”. Today the newspaper is published by the group subsidiary "Media24", which is responsible for newspapers and magazines.

Until the end of apartheid , Rapport , like almost all Afrikaans-language newspapers, was closely tied to the ruling National Party . After this time, the newspaper gave up this commitment and today accompanies, among other things, efforts to ensure the survival of the once privileged Afrikaans in South Africa, which now has eleven official languages.

Some of the most famous Afrikaans-speaking writers worked for Rapport . André Brink was temporarily responsible for the book page, while Etienne van Heerden was a columnist. Together with the Naspers subsidiary “Via Afrika”, the newspaper awards the renowned “Jan Rabie-Rapportprys”, endowed with 35,000 Rand , a literary prize for outstanding African-language works named after the writer Jan Rabie .
