Rottenmann City Hall

The Rottenmanner Rathaus on the main square in the old town was built in the Art Nouveau style in the early 20th century. The town hall houses the Rottenmann municipal administration , the municipal branch of the Steiermärkische Sparkasse and a notary's office. On the second floor there is the counseling room with balcony and the registry office as well as other administrative offices of the municipality.

history

The plan of the town hall according to Dauner

Initially, the plans came from Heinrich Dauner , but were later rejected and the Viennese Josef Hofbauer (1875-1936) was commissioned as the architect . The town hall was one of his first important buildings. Compared to Dauner's rather small-scale design based on the Renaissance and Baroque , Hofbauer's concept is characterized by greater clarity and monumentality. Even if the details borrowed from the Art Nouveau style of the Wagner school are unmistakable, the main facade in particular is strongly in the tradition of neo-classical building.

construction

As a sign of urban rule, the tower itself is a distinct traditional element that has been an integral part of town hall architecture since the late Middle Ages . The construction of the Rottenmann Town Hall is by no means radically modern, but rather presents itself as a successful new version of a traditional building project in the modern forms of Art Nouveau.

Sculptures

The dominant element is a monumental row of pilasters , which extends over all floors in a colossal order . The pilasters continue in half-length figures above the eaves in the building's attic zone. These figures represent various crafts, trades and industries that were important to the mining and industrial town of Rottenmann. They were carried out by the sculptor Wilhelm Gösser (1881–1966), a native of Leoben who, after training in Vienna, worked primarily in Graz and Styria . Similar to the architect Hofbauer, Gösser was still at the beginning of his career when he worked in / for Rottenmann - he had only completed his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1912. The sculpture of the Red Man , a mythical dragon slayer, after whom Rottenmann is named after a legend , also comes from Gösser .
