Josef Hofbauer (architect)
Josef Hofbauer (born May 23, 1875 in Vienna ; † December 19, 1936 there ) was an Austrian architect and builder .
Life
Josef Hofbauer was the son of a town architect. He finished the state trade school in 1893 , acquired the master builder's license in 1894 and was an extraordinary student at the technical university from 1898 to 1899 . From 1904 to 1907 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Friedrich Ohmann . Then he received the state travel grant, the so-called Rome Prize. He received his first major contract in 1908 with the construction of the elementary school and the municipal office in Mauerbach .
After completing military service in World War I, Hofbauer formed a working group from 1921 with his former fellow student Wilhelm Baumgarten . The two architects subsequently acquired a good reputation for building numerous school buildings. From 1919 to 1924 Hofbauer was also assistant at the master school Ohmann at the academy, where he headed the building school from 1922 to 1924. In 1933 the shared office with Wilhelm Baumgarten was dissolved for unknown reasons, after which no more buildings from him are known until Hofbauer's death.
