The GRG 12 Erlgasse is a federal high school and high school in the 12th district of Meidling in  Vienna .

history

In the 1900s it became clear that due to the increasing population and number of students in the Viennese district of Meidling, founded in 1890 , it would appear expedient to set up a secondary school . In 1909 about 250 pupils commuted in secondary schools in the surrounding districts and thus the school was established with effect from the school year 1910/11 by the association for the establishment of a Kaiser Jubilee secondary school in the 12th district of Meidling in Vienna . First director of the institute with 58 students in the first grade was the former kk professor at the State Secondary School in Vienna-Mariahilf Ferdinand Ginzel.

In the first few years the school was only housed in provisional rooms; from the school year 1913/14 until the move to its current location in Erlgasse, it was housed at 189 Schönbrunner Strasse. The school was also nationalized in the school year 1913/14.

In the school year 1929/30 the school had the highest number of pupils before the Second World War, with 385 pupils .

In 1940 the school moved into the current school building in Erlgasse, at the time of National Socialism the official name was the State High School for Boys in the 12th district .

After the war, the school was located in the 15th Viennese district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus , and in 1947 the building in Erlgasse was moved into again after the bomb damage had been repaired.

There were several schools in the Erlgasse school building from 1940 to 1972: At the beginning the Czech school and the “Oberschule für Jungs” (high school for boys), which later became the Bundesrealgymnasium for the 12th district, BRG XII. (the "boys' high school") was. From 1945 this school had to be the school building with the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium for girls Vienna XII. ("Girls High School") share. The girls' grammar school was located on the first two floors (and had a branch at 19 Singrienergasse, because this school, too, suffered from lack of space).

In later years, these two schools also accepted students of the opposite sex. The BRG XII, originally located in the school building. At the beginning of the 1972/73 school year, the whole moved to the Singrienergasse 19-21 building (No. 21: former ORF studio), the classes from the former girls' school were moved to the Erlgasse building. The statement that someone went to school “in Erlgasse” only gives an indication of the school building until 1972, but does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the school attended. The BRG XII. Then in the school year 1986/87 received two classes in a branch in Vienna 1230 Vienna, Anton Baumgartnerstraße 119 and from 1998 was completely relocated to Vienna Inzersdorf in the Draschestraße. This school became GRG 23 / VBS in Draschestraße 90-92 and has nothing to do with its old location in Erlgasse. Since 1973, only the GRG, which was founded as a girls' school in 1939, has been in the Erlgasse school building. 12. The development is relevant when looking for older documents such as lists of pupils and teachers for “the Erlgasse”: then until 1972 two sources are always to be looked for, the annual reports for BRG XII. only provide the data for this school.

Since the school was attended by several top politicians, it was also called "Eliteschmiede Erlgasse".

school-building

The school building was built in 1930/31 for the Czech-speaking minority in Vienna as the “ Komensky School” according to plans by the architects Josef Hofbauer and Wilhelm Baumgarten . The construction company was Universale AG, Redlich & Berger. The Czech school kept about half of the rooms for its own school operation until 1941. Inscriptions in Czech remained in the building until after 1960. The land for the school building was made available by the municipality of Vienna to the “Komensky School Association” and the “Czech Heart” association (with foreign subsidies). A large mural of the city of Prague in the stairwell reminds of the original use . The school building is a listed building .

School operation

It is a public school and no school fees are required to attend.

The school offers lessons as an upper and lower grammar school and a real grammar school. In addition, there is afternoon supervision with non-binding exercises (courses such as soccer, volleyball, etc.) and, from the upper level, a module system to prepare for the Matura .

In the 2018/19 school year, 625 students, who were taught by 66 teachers, attended the school. Elfriede Wotke is the director.
