The town hall in Roßlau is a monument in the independent city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

The development of Roßlau (Elbe) was a lengthy process that was accompanied by a gradual increase in importance. Although it was first called a town in 1382, even 300 years later, namely in 1685, the place was still called Flecken. This corresponds to a small number of inhabitants and even when a city council is mentioned in 1541, the number of inhabitants is only around 400. One reads about guilds for the first time around the year 1633.

In 1740, Prince Johann August v. Anhalt-Zerbst the construction of a town hall in Roßlau. This was created on the south side of the market. His death in 1742, however, delayed the completion of the building enormously. A historical view shows a symmetrical building with a prominent central projection and a roof tower above it.

When Roßlau came to Anhalt-Köthen in 1797 , Prince August Christian ordered a school to be placed on the upper floor. When this was no longer sufficient in the middle of the 19th century, negotiations were initially carried out between 1858 and 1860 on the expansion of the town hall, but this led to the whole building becoming a school (opened as such on October 21, 1861) and the city administration moved to the castle. The roof turret was also lost during this renovation.

The school's space requirements continued to grow and so a new school was finally built between 1878 and 1879 and the school moved out in May 1879, while the city administration moved in again. The building was still owned by Anhalt and in 1901 the city's offer to buy it was rejected. The government had no money left for the building, the city was only tenant and so the condition deteriorated so seriously that in 1927 the demolition of the building was recommended, which at that time was called the town house .

In 1932, the reconstruction was finally decided, which was implemented by 1934. A year later, Roßlau was incorporated into Dessau and the building became superfluous again. The main user was now the district court, later it became the district court, but in 1960 this also moved out. Now the SED district leadership has moved in, whose previous seat has become the district culture house. Between 1972 and 1975, she arranged for the building to be converted. After the fall of the Wall , the city administration moved in again, but ownership remained difficult.

Today, among other things, the Roßlau Citizens' Office is located in the building. It is listed in the monument register with registration number 094 71535.
