Town Hall (Kecskemét)
The town hall of Kecskemét ( Hungarian Kecskeméti városháza ) is the main administrative building of the Hungarian city of Kecskemét . It is located in the center of the city on Kossuth tér .
The building, designed by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos , was built in 1893 and is one of the most important examples of Art Nouveau in Hungary. The decoration of the building, especially the roof, with porcelain plates from the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory is influenced by the Magyar and Turkic folk art. With this decoration began the national romanticism of Hungary, which found its climax in the Hungarian Museum of Decorative Arts . The building itself shows stylistic elements of the Baroque and Renaissance , for which it was criticized by the national romantic Károly Kós . There is a carillon above the main entrance, which plays a melody from the Háry János Suite by Zoltán Kodály every hour . The interior was done by Bertalan Székely , who also furnished the Matthias Church. He painted the gilded walls in the Great Hall. The staircase, also in Baroque style, is accompanied by elaborate glass painting in the stairwell. On the first floor there is the wood-paneled, frescoed council chamber.
