Town hall to the outer stand
The Rathaus zum Äusseren Stand is a historic building at Zeughausgasse 17 in the old town of Bern .
history
It was built before 1731 by order of the Äusseren Stand , a kind of old Bernese youth parliament . In 1798 the outer state was dissolved, but the building continued to serve as a meeting room: 1799 for the Helvetic Senate , 1804 to 1847 for the Diet (which passed the first Swiss Federal Constitution here in 1848 ), 1848 to 1858 for the Council of States and 1850 to 1900 for the Bern jury .
In the hall, which was rebuilt in Empire style in 1817 , the first Bernese state constitution was drawn up and signed in 1831, the Universal Postal Union was founded in 1874 , and from 1903 to 1934 it housed the Swiss Alpine Museum . In 1904 the house went into private ownership and from 1934 the large hall served as a sales room. The house then became a restaurant and has since been used again for meetings. In 1999 the Federal Council presented the latest revision of the federal constitution to the Swiss public.
