The town hall fountain is a listed running water fountain in front of the town hall in Kempten (Allgäu) . In the middle of the octagonal fountain is a bronze column cast in 1601 with the statue of a Roman general .

history

In front of the town hall, a market fountain with a fountain column was set up in 1576. The octagonal well box was then made of oak . The same applies to the column, which was additionally carved, painted and gilded. In 1601 the demands rose. The wooden structure was replaced by a stone basin. In the middle, a 20 hundredweight bronze column , probably cast in Kempten, was placed.

The fountain was restored between 1991 and 1993. It changed its location by placing it on a concrete foundation closer to the town hall. The column was replaced by a copy for conservation reasons and the original fountain figure was brought to the Allgäu Museum .

description

The top of the column is the figure of a Roman general who holds two coats of arms in his hands. Below you can see the coats of arms of the two patrician mayors Raimund Dorn and Josef König. The figure of the general bears witness to the early modern return to the city's Roman roots. Like the Augustus Fountain in Augsburg, it could be a monument to a fictional Roman city founder.

In addition to putti , dolphins can be seen on the column , which act as gargoyles . The wrought iron grille based on a design by Adolf Leichtle (1841–1913) was attached to the fountain basin in 1886.

The fountain has been covered in winter since 2001. This is done with a protective showcase in which pictures from the Oberammergau carving school are exhibited during the Christmas market. The eight works made of linden wood represent the most important stages in the Christmas story.
