The Rathauspark Lichtenberg is a green area in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg , which extends between the Rathaus Lichtenberg (north), Frankfurter Allee (south), Möllendorffstraße (west) and Rathausstraße (east).

Location and history

Creation of a green area

At the beginning of the development of what was then Lichtenberg, today's area formed a small interior area behind the residential buildings on Frankfurter Allee and what was then Hauptstrasse (later Möllendorffstrasse). It was part of a cemetery that was laid out in the 13th century and extended eastwards to what would later become Ruschestraße. Some trees grew on the area to keep the air clean.

1945 to 1990

After the Second World War there was only one block of flats at the beginning of Möllendorffstrasse, the trees had largely been preserved. The Hertie department store , which originally stood on the corner lot, was destroyed, as were the rental houses along Frankfurter Allee. After the war, the ruins were cleared away , and a green area was set up right on the corner, the center of which is the restored fishing fountain . This green area was named Stefan-Heym-Platz in the 21st century and is not part of the new planning.

Blood wall
Heirs of the Spartakus fighters ; one of the sculptures

The Blood Wall Memorial , formerly part of the cemetery, is located in the southern area of the park . Eleven insurgents and civilians were shot and buried on this cemetery wall during fighting in March 1919. To commemorate this event, two memorial plaques are placed directly on the wall and in 1989 the East Berlin administration had the sculpture Heirs of the Spartakus Fighters erected on the lawn leading to the town hall , made by the sculptor Emerita Pansowová .

Grave of
Wilhelmine Loeper

The grave of Wilhelmine Loeper , a listed cultural monument , has also been preserved from the former cemetery .

In front of a barrack installed on the side of Möllendorffstrasse in the 1960s, which served as the housing authority for the city district, some flower beds were laid out and seating was set up.

Since 1990

After the political change , the barracks was still a civil office for a long time, after which it was demolished. A small square overgrown with low bushes and the preserved ornamental bed are still a reminder of this. In 2013, the apprentices from the Green Spaces Office drew up project sketches for this approximately 4,000 m² area, which were called Rathausblick . They hung in one of the public visitor rooms. The redesign should be carried out in 2014 and was estimated at 35,000 euros.

The entire park, which was never officially dedicated as the town hall park, has remained largely unnoticed for a long time and was only used once or twice a year for larger events. For example, the medieval market or a district festival has been held here every year since the 1990s . Craftsmen are invited to show visitors their skills, including forging, making glass beads, weaving baskets and making candles. The products are then sold.

Redesign to a dedicated park from 2016

In 2016, BVV Lichtenberg decided to upgrade it to a real urban park and in spring 2017 invited five landscape architecture offices to a competing appraisal process . The Loeper grave, the blood wall, the ornamental fountain are to be preserved. A new playground is being planned because the existing one has to give way to the construction of a residential complex by Howoge . A small area east of Rathausstrasse along Rudolf-Reusch-Strasse is to be integrated into the newly designed park. The winning projects, including first place from the Marcel Adam office, were presented to the public in November 2017. Taking into account the ideas of local residents and students from the Cecilien Lyceum , they are brought into the implementation phase under the responsibility of the Stattbau office . One million euros will be available for this from October 2019 . Of this, 135,190 euros come from the urban development contract with the Howoge housing association as compensation for neighboring construction projects and 864,000 euros from funds from the Urban Redevelopment East project . The new Rathauspark will be built in three stages by the end of 2020.
