Town hall square with town hall

The town hall square in the South Tyrolean city of Bruneck was only recently laid out. But it already plays an important role in the life of the city - as an event location and through the buildings that are located here. Located opposite the old town, it forms the new public administration center of Bruneck. The town hall square covers approximately 3000 m².

history

Rathausplatz, located between Graben and Europastraße, is on the area where the bus station and prison used to be. In 2003 the place was officially named by the community committee. The large square is now used for events such as the city festival, which takes place every two years, and also for concerts. It is paved and without any plants. In the middle of the square, glowing blue oblique steles by Paul Feichter carry inscriptions from texts by Norbert C. Kaser . In addition, there is a floor sundial by Luis Seiwald near the town hall , where your own body acts as a time-telling shadow stick, provided you are at the right point on the floor.

No. 1: Town Hall

The town hall of Bruneck is already the seventh building with this function in the city. The former town halls were on Stadtgasse and Graben. The large and modern building was opened in 2004, but was not without controversy because of the high construction costs of almost 7 million euros and the modern architectural style. The curved shape, which is based on that of the Stadtgasse in the historic center of Bruneck, is striking. In addition, the practical purpose was also intended to slow down the winds from the Tauferer Tal and to shield the town hall square from them. The building was designed by the architects Abram & Schnabl. It is plastered white, the ground floor was clad with large natural stone panels made of Lusen granite . The heart of the interior is the council chamber, which can be seen from the outside. It is designed for 30 municipal council seats, which are grouped in a semicircle. Behind it are the seats for the spectators. The council chamber is high and light and should give the impression of transparency.

No. 6: Courthouse

Today's Peace Court was built in 1847 as a district office building. It is free-standing on all sides between Rathausplatz and Europastraße . The representative facade consists of regular rows of windows (the windows are framed and suspected) and a central, stone-framed portal. Corner blocks, cornices and pilasters also structure the front. Inside there are groin vaulted corridors with belt arches ; there are vaulted rooms on the ground floor. In addition to the court, the house is also home to the revenue agency , a tax office. The former district prison - the so-called "Tschumpus" - located at the back of the court was demolished when the new town hall square was built.
